Hi Ben,

I'll have the interview with Windows Live team next week.
I think it is very lucky that I found your posting today. It will be a great help.
I am an international candidate and will have remote interviews instead of onsite.

Until now, I have experienced almost same things what you experienced. I also have the experience of the Google Interview. But in my case, Google suddenly froze my hiring process because of the top priority project.

If I get the offer from MS, I'll visit this page again and will leave thank you message again.

Thank you for this very useful information.

Viplav, when I started, they asked me when I wanted to start. I can't imagine it would be a problem, but you'll have to work that out with HR and your future manager.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for all the information you have provided about the interview process, I have a interview coming up for SDET II position.

I do have a question regarding SDET position, hope you can help.

I have 7 years of experience in Software industry and have been working as a Technical Lead in my current company. I am not sure whether SDET II is the right position for me with my experience level. Can you please tell me what is the hierarchy in Microsoft for Testing teams and is it that SDET II may be a position lower from my current job.
Technical Lead in my current organization is responsible for delivering a product starting with working with business teams to get the requirements to final delivery. I currently lead an 8 member team.

Thanks alot

Hello Ben,

Thanks a lot of posting your experience. Even though its been 2 years things are almost the same so not a lof difference. Helps in preparation.i just interviewed with MS last thursday (May 20) for a Technical Support Engineer role. I was excited to go to Building 19 and was hoping to experience all that you have written about it.. :D However, my interview was in Red West building. I enjoyed the whole interview process and the 6 rounds of it. The first three which I wanted to make sure I did my best to stay on after lunch. Which I did until the 6th interview. Was completely exhausted after the last one. The oly differnce was that there is no lunch interview. I was left with a box of tasty panini for lunch.

All the interviewers were very nice. The HR recruiter set the mood right in the beginning and made sure I was comfortable through the process. So its been two days and waiting to hear from the recruiter to know if I made it through or not..

Thanks again for your post.. it is a great read and very informative.. keep up the great work.. :)

Reading this article made me nervous for you. Good thing I already knew the outcome. :)

By the way...
> This is completely subjective and I’m biased, but I thought
> the people I interacted with at Microsoft were nicer than at
> Google. Maybe it’s because I did better, maybe it was my
> attitude, or maybe I was lucky with the people I spoke to.

That's because they live in Seattle! I think people there are just more friendly than in Boston, SF, DC, etc. It reminds me of the time we were visiting my family in Seattle; we were on the freeway, and Rachel got angry because "all of the cars on the freeway are only going the speed limit! What's wrong with these people?!"

Hi C Mist, I'm not sure I can give you much guidance. I'm not very familiar with that role specifically, but I imagine your interview would be much more focused on big-picture type of things than with code.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for posting your interviewing experience... it most definitely helps us wanna-be microsoft'rs!!

I might have an interview as an Application Architect (not in the US office), and was wondering if the interview process would still be technically focused as the role as described in the job description appears to be somewhat of a 'consulting-type' of role; with tasks such as pre-sales support, providing customer guidance during product/sales cycles, providing internal practice management risk assessment, etc.

I started with C++ (Linux) in college and then slowly moved to C# for a brief time. I always like to prepare for the worst case scenario and will definitely read your recommended books, but as a matter of curiosity, do you think that they will focus on programming questions??

I understand there are other variables in this equation, but your thoughts would be appreciated...

Thx
-C Mist

Hi James, I don't think I can answer your question--not because it's secret, but because there isn't a single answer. I think in general, you'll be asked questions of increasing difficulty until you can't answer them anymore, but you should always try your best. I'm not aware of any single rule that decides when you'll be asked for an in-person interview.

Hi Ben! Really liked your acticle and thanks for sharing with us.

First, I think I should introduce myself. I am an electrical engineering student in my third year, but I like programming a lot! So I basically taught myself everything related to programming. Working in Microsoft is my childhood dream so I am excited about it.

I had an on-campus interview couple months ago, unfortunately I didn't get the second-round interview. I am not sure if you can answer this( so PLEASE don't worry if you can't) I was wondering how well do you need to do in your first interview in order to get the next one. In my case, during the first one, they asked me one string reversal question, I answered that correctly, then they changed the question a bit but with more difficulty, so I gave them my answer again. Anyway, they did this again and again until I couldn't answer them. So I just want to ask you that is there a standard that how many questions you can answer correctly for the interview for them to test how well your technical skills? Thanks a lot!

I will try to apply again this coming semester. After reading your article, I feel like there's a lot for me learn. I will try my best from now on, and hopefully get another interview.

Much appreciated and have fun in Microsoft!
