Ben,

I like the initial definition: "Wasting time is doing anything that does not contribute to my goals." I also like that that suposes that we have goals. The reference to "7 habits" by Covey is a good place to start.

If I am wasting time it is becaue my goals are not clear.

I am on the right track as before reading your blog I recently  dusted off my copy of Steven Covey's book and am listening to his tape in my car.

Time to set goals, break them down into managable tasks and get started.

Thanks.

And to think i thought that planning things was wasting my time... breaking things into sub-tasks sounds like a very effective idea.

Thanks so much for this article!

I wish I could write more of these types of articles as well. Work keeps me so busy, and the blog has definitely suffered a bit.

Hey Ben,

Just found this via StumbleUpon and I must say, it's a very concise, well-written time management article. I'd love to see more like this from you.

Not wasting time has more to do with one's own expectations from oneself than someone else's definition.

In the long run it does not matter what you did or did not. You msut be happy doing or not doing what ever you are doing.

A nice article.

As you said, planning and breaking into small targets saves lot of wondering time. Also it gives you some satisfaction at the end of the day, when you look at your task list.

However sometimes it becomes harder to make a plan when all of your projects are stuck due to various reasons and not sure how much time you would spent on researching on each. There also we should create a task list, just to maintain the focus.

[...] Can you really be productive if your goals suck? Motivation can often begin with picking good goals. If your goals are unrealistic, you are almost guaranteed to fail in some way. Despair feeds on itself and will sink your productivity and cause you to engage in anything but work. Not only will you avoid the drudgery of work, but you won’t take steps to improve yourself or change the situation. This cycle must be broken immediately. (via philosophical geek) [...]
