Nice post!
One thing that is never considered though is that when you leave work with a problem unsolved, normally your you keep working in your head all night, or even worse when you have a major problem, something that takes days to solve, you keep working everyday, always tring to get a solution.

How to bill this time?! Not that is something needed to be billed, but sometimes is worth to consider in the whole work-month-hours.

Once you get a few years of experience onboard, it's time to adopt a very simple rule: "I do not work for free anymore". If they want a 10 hour day to get the product out the door, then they can pay you the overtime. If they "don't have it on the budget", or any bullshit like that, then that means that the project does not have the budget to get the product out the door. Not your problem.

"I do not work for free anymore".

PS: when management stops providing free coffee and biscuits (cookies) in the lunch room, start looking for another job. A project that can't blow a couple of hundred a week on keeping the bottom level employees happy is a project that is going down.

I am glad someone sees things the way i do. Don't worry - I am very passionate about computers but the reality of work limits creative programming. I have a strong seperation of work and private life. That way the business and myself don't take advantage of each other. I work extra as necessary but I would rather be programming my own stuff on my own time. We both need to respect each others time. And the business still gets a better deal as a rested developer is a productive developer.

How to work a 7.5-hour day : Move to Europe.

@James :- I wouldn't work for you as I wouldn't be able to relate to any of the people you do hire.

Excellent post. I'm a developer at a creative firm, and I sit mixed in with a group of creative individuals, which I really enjoy. There are, however, times when the group gets a bit rowdy and a good set of headphones and a big library of music is great to keep you focused. One of the best tools there are to keep you from getting distracted.

@James -> I'd rather hire someone concerned with the overall atmosphere, productivity and efficiency of my team or company than someone who just works late and pretends to be passionate. A real passionate person will always be looking for ways to improve things, not just accept how they are.

Usually I don't stay later than half an hour, and a precious half an hour it is because things have slowed down by that point and I can concentrate on wrapping things up. The exceptions are when I get to cover events, in which case I'm well-compensated for staying late, going in early. But, yeah, in general, I'm able to manage my time well enough that I can fit work into 8 hours. If you have to work more than 8 hours from time to time, make sure you're doing it for something you enjoy. But even jobs that you enjoy can be a strain if you consistently find yourself working 12-hour days. The point is to balance your work/private life so you can enjoy both.

@James, not true--I am passionate about what I do, but that doesn't imply working long days. I'm also passionate about my hobbies, and other activities outside of work.

The post was inspired from seeing huge wastes of time and productivity at work, not a general desire to leave. Just because you're passionate doesn't mean you can't be efficient.

I would not hire someone like you as your mindset indicates you're not passionate about your work.

In the words of Donald Trump, "you're fired!"
