I totally agree with each and every word of the article. I'm pleased to read the symptoms of a passionate guy which you've listed - each one of them matches with my habits and activities which I do in my spare time and weekends.

Its funny, I came up with a very similar article premise, The 4 Characteristics of Highly Effective Developers, but my article takes a slightly different angle than yours. I like what you have here, though, and I agree with a lot of it. I think if I had to write my article again, I would definitely add passion. You make some good points on that. BTW, feel free to post a comment on my blog with a link back to yours as I think my audience (not as big as yours) would be interested in this.

There are a couple (to start) of annoying clichés the programming profession. They are:

1. passion

2. the importance of communication skills

Regarding #1, please call it something else, like enthusiasm. I’m just tired of hearing passion and passionate when talking about programming. The word just sounds so out of context, like it belongs in a romance novel and not in programming blogs. However, the gist of what your saying is understood.

I believe that great software and not so great software is differentiated by the mundane tasks that programmers must do, and get paid to do. For example, tracking down that bug that only happens in the Japanese version of XP home when the folder name is greater than 256 chars. not too many people are enthusiastic about that kind of thing. This is one reason that free software will never equal purchased software in quality and usability.

@Christian, I completely know the feeling that it can be very difficult to work on personal projects, especially with a demanding job, family life, and all the other commitments we all have. In the end, though, life should be lived and enjoyed. If you're enjoying what you do, that's what matters, even if you don't have time for everything.

While the Perl 'virtues' of laziness, impatience and hubris seemed amusing when I first heard them (a long time ago), I have since come to conclude that their opposites are a better representation of real virtues for programmers (and everyone else).

My programming virtues are:
- diligence
- patience
- humility

Glad to see that I'm not alone in my conclusion, as this article demonstrates.

Loved the article!

I've been starting to work on a different mindset that goes for being humble and adaptive, and I believe it's the best way to deal with the kind of work enviroment we're in.

The only thing I can't still do is have personal projects. Not because I do not have ideas , I have a lot of ideas. But working sometimes stresses me out too much and when I come home I procrastinate easily on it, and when i feel like it, there's never time for it. And I don't know how to fix that.. Is anybody familiar with the feeling ?
